Bootcamp: That\u2019s not drill sergeants barking<\/h2>\n<div>By <a href=\"\/vicky-hallett\/2011\/03\/24\/AFNpEzwB_page.html\" rel=\"author\">Vicky Hallett<\/a>,<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div id=\"article\">\n<div id=\"article_body\">\n<div>\n<article>Expect to pick up more than just weights if you enlist in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thankdogbootcamp.com\/\" data-xslt=\"_http\">Thank Dog! Bootcamp<\/a>, a fitness and obedience program\u201cWe clean up our poop. It\u2019s one of the rules of class,\u201d says owner and personal trainer Karen Krieg, who\u2019d been looking for a way to merge her two loves: fitness and dogs. She found her inspiration while watching Animal Planet\u2019s \u201cDogs 101.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/article>\n<\/div>\n<p>The show highlighted the work of Thank Dog!, which was founded in Burbank, Calif., in 2008 by Jill Bowers and her twin sister, Jamie. Bowers, a highly regarded dog trainer, had struggled with her weight until committing to a boot camp. Forty pounds peeled off, but she didn\u2019t like spending all that time away from her Doberman pinscher. Her mission? Create a boot camp they could do together.<\/p>\n<div>\n<article>\u201cKnowing that some people don\u2019t have control over their dogs, I also wanted to add obedience. And I wanted to make it fun for humans,\u201d says Bowers, who played around with the structure until she settled on the Thank Dog! model. Each hour-long class is divided into 10-minute segments, alternating between cardio drills combined with dog commands and strength-building circuits (performed by just the humans).That breakdown works, she explains, because dogs can\u2019t be trained for more than 10 minutes at a time. Plus, after 10 minutes of sprinting, high knees and shuffle steps, everyone\u2019s panting. \u201cThey need water, and the humans do, too,\u201d Bowers says.<\/p>\n<p>Students in L.A. have lapped it up, and as the program has gotten media attention \u2014 most recently, on an episode of \u201cDog Whisperer With <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/discussion\/2009\/11\/12\/DI2009111209395.html\" data-xslt=\"_http\">Cesar Millan<\/a>\u201d in August \u2014 there\u2019s been demand to expand to other cities.<\/p>\n<p>But replicating Thank Dog! isn\u2019t as simple as learning a few commands. \u201cThere\u2019s an amount of organization and creativity needed to keep it safe and interesting. It\u2019s not just running around a park with dogs,\u201d says Noelle Blessey, who took over as Bowers\u2019s partner when her sister decided to pursue transcendental meditation.<\/p>\n<p>The gradual expansion started a year and a half ago, when Thank Dog! was licensed in Toronto. It\u2019s since spread to Chicago, Cleveland, Boston and now the Washington area.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s how I came to find myself holding the leash of Rosie, one of Krieg\u2019s two pit bull rescues, learning the basics of dog handling. Typically, new students get a personal one-hour training session before their first class to go over the commands. Because Rosie already knew the drill, I had an abbreviated lesson.<\/p>\n<p>When I said \u201cheel,\u201d Rosie followed me. She sat when I said \u201csit,\u201d got down when I said \u201cdown\u201d and stayed when I said \u201cstay\u201d and walked in a circle around her. I had a bit more trouble following the directions for humans, which include keeping the dog to the left of you at all times and not allowing the dogs to get close enough to socialize.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis way, there are no dogfights,\u201d explained Krieg, who said focusing on the human-dog relationship throughout class is also important to solidify your bond. \u201cYou\u2019re spending quality time together, not just walking and talking on the phone.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/article>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Thank Dog!
