{"id":2042,"date":"2013-03-26T22:57:32","date_gmt":"2013-03-26T22:57:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.animalhealthfoundation.net\/blog\/?p=2042"},"modified":"2013-03-26T22:57:32","modified_gmt":"2013-03-26T22:57:32","slug":"pet-partner-team-roxey-and-sandy-help-autistic-children","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.animalhealthfoundation.org\/blog\/2013\/03\/pet-partner-team-roxey-and-sandy-help-autistic-children\/","title":{"rendered":"Pet Partner Team Roxey and Sandy help Autistic children"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.animalhealthfoundation.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Sandy-and-Roxy.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2044\" alt=\"Sandy and Roxy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.animalhealthfoundation.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Sandy-and-Roxy.jpg\" width=\"133\" height=\"208\" \/><\/a>Roxey (a Shetland Sheepdog) and her handler, Sandy assist a speech\u00a0therapist with her autistic clients once a month.\u00a0The boy is pre-school age and just started regular classes at a regular pre-school.\u00a0\u00a0Sandy has been working with them for about a year.<\/p>\n<p>The mother\u00a0 of the boy is in the session the whole time taking notes while the therapist works on vocabulary and sentence\u00a0 structure.\u00a0 They often try to pick vocabulary words that Roxey can illustrate.\u00a0 One word he was having particular problems with was &#8220;sausage.&#8221;\u00a0 So Sandy took\u00a0sausage &#8220;looking&#8221; treats for\u00a0the boy\u00a0to feed Roxey.\u00a0 If he said the word correctly, he got to toss the treat to Roxey.\u00a0 We&#8217;ve also been working on conjugating verbs, so we go through actions like &#8220;Roxey is sitting,&#8221; and &#8220;Roxey sat.&#8221;\u00a0 Sometimes his vocabulary words include things Roxey can wear:\u00a0 sunglasses, hat, feathers, etc.\u00a0 For Halloween, &#8220;ghost&#8221; was a word for the boy, so Roxey came dressed as a ghost.\u00a0 Another time, &#8220;basket&#8221; was a word, so\u00a0 Sandy\u00a0strapped a basket onto Roxey&#8217;s back, and\u00a0the boy\u00a0put other vocabulary word items into her basket.\u00a0 Roxey especially loves sessions when there are food vocabulary words because she often gets to eat.<\/p>\n<p>Sandy and Roxey have just started working with a little girl who\u00a0loves animals, so Roxey is there to motivate her.\u00a0 Most of our first session was Roxey being a model for the\u00a0opposite of the word\u00a0being taught (over\/under, front\/back), body parts (leg, ear, nose), and feeding treats to when\u00a0she got\u00a0something right.\u00a0\u00a0The girl was\u00a0being taught to greet people, so Roxey would wave to her and she would say &#8220;hello&#8221; to Roxey.<\/p>\n<p>Sandy and Roxey love their role to help autistic children<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Roxey (a Shetland Sheepdog) and her handler, Sandy assist a speech\u00a0therapist with her autistic clients once a month.\u00a0The boy is pre-school age and just started regular classes at a regular pre-school.\u00a0\u00a0Sandy has been working with them for about a year.
