\"TEDDY<\/a>About three years ago, Sherrill Cook adopted a Saint Bernard.\u00a0 Her four sons welcomed Teddy to the family \u2013 but he was Sherrill\u2019s dog.\u00a0 She is largely confined to a wheelchair and he is a service animal.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe pulls my wheelchair. If I am standing and start to fall, he will push me up against something and brace me all on his own. Teddy is tuned in to my heart rate and talks to me when it gets up to 120.\u201d\u00a0 How does he do that?\u00a0 \u201cI don\u2019t know.\u00a0 I had an asthma attack once and they couldn\u2019t get my heart rate under control. It was sky-rocketing and they sent me home anyway.\u00a0 Teddy just sat there and talked to me.\u201d Can he see a physical change? \u201cI think he can sense it.\u00a0 He\u2019s really in tune with me. He knows when something is off.\u00a0 He is alert to an anxiety attack.\u00a0 And he wears a harness that I can use for balance.<\/p>\n

In January, 2013, Sherrill and her husband, Jeremy, took Teddy to a dog park near their Thousand Oaks home \u201cso he could relax and be a dog.\u00a0 He was running around and he went down and blew out his knee.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Cooks took Teddy to Tustin Santa Ana Veterinary Hospital, not far from the agency where they had adopted him.\u00a0 Laura Weatherford, DVM, performed surgery for a partial tear in Teddy\u2019s Anterior Cruciate Ligament.\u00a0 \u201cShe is really great,\u201d Sherrill said. \u201cShe works with you and she explains everything really well.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jeremy Cook is a computer engineer.\u00a0 But the family was \u201cliving paycheck to paycheck and we were really short of money at the time of the surgery, Sherrill said.\u00a0 The Cooks applied for help from Angel Fund. \u201cIt worked really well. We\u2019ve just been really blessed,\u201d she said. Angel Fund contributed $500 to Teddy\u2019s bill and so did the hospital.<\/p>\n

Teddy was in the hospital four days and then had to be confined to a kennel at the Cooks\u2019 home for eight weeks. Then he resumed his duties as Sherrill chief companion and helpmate.<\/p>\n

But Teddy, who just turned four, \u201cblew out his other knee chasing a cat in the backyard\u201d and needs surgery again.\u00a0 This time, Sherrill said, she will pay for the operation with funds from an inheritance she is getting from her late father.\u00a0 She will get around, in the meantime, with help from her husband and sons.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
