\"\"<\/a>Baby Kitty \u2013 a beautiful Siamese cat \u2013 had \u201ca few issues with eating and tummy problems\u201d in 2016, owner Cherry Simkins recalled in an interview.\u00a0 \u201cI didn\u2019t worry about it that much.\u201d<\/p>\n

But the two-year-old feline\u2019s condition worsened.\u00a0 And one day, Cherry could not find him, despite a long search of all his favorite haunts in the yard of her Torrance home.\u00a0 By this time Baby Kitty had stopped eating entirely, she said, and she was worried.\u00a0 Her veterinarian, Dr. Alice Villalobos of Pawspice and Animal Oncology in Hermosa Beach,\u00a0 suggested that she search places \u201cwhere you know he couldn\u2019t be \u2013 every crack and crevice.\u201d And she found him in a stack of wood that he had crawled inside.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe realized that he couldn\u2019t eat and he had crawled in there and decided that he would die there,\u201d she said. \u201cHe was turning into a skeleton and his food was not being processed by his body.\u201d<\/p>\n

She took Baby Kitty to Dr. Edward M. Leeds at Surgical Group for Animals in Torrance, referred by Dr. Villalobos, who had diagnosed the cat with a diaphragmatic hernia.\u00a0 Cherry thinks that the condition may have been the consequence of a fall.\u00a0 Many of his abdominal organs had crowded into his chest cavity, impinging on his lungs and heart and threatening his life.<\/p>\n

The Surgical Group performed corrective surgery and guided Cherry to Angel Fund, which provided a grant of $500.\u00a0 The hospital contributed $1,938.\u00a0 \u201cIt wasn\u2019t something I could take care of,\u201c Cherry said. \u201cI had had some really hard times financially.\u201d<\/p>\n

She was told that the likelihood was that her cat would not survive. But she said, \u201ceveryone was pulling for Baby Kitty. There was no doubt in my mind that he would pull through.\u201d\u00a0 He did.\u00a0 And now, she said, \u201che is a much sweeter cat.\u00a0 He\u2019s the most loving cat.\u00a0 It really shows how thankful he was that he was saved.\u00a0 He\u2019s really touched a lot of hearts and that makes him all the more special.\u201d<\/p>\n

Baby Kitty\u2019s recovery was not without its problems.\u00a0 He and his brother Poofa are outdoor cats and they want to keep it that way, Cherry said.\u00a0 He hated being in a cage where he needed to be confined for a month, she said.\u00a0 \u201cHe just went crazy.\u00a0 It meant I couldn\u2019t work like a needed to.\u00a0 He needed a lot of love and care. I had to hold him and calm him and keep him settled because he wanted out.\u00a0 Even wearing a cone, he figured out how to get out of that cage. He was able to lift the edge of it and slide out \u2013 and it was a heavy cage.\u00a0 He flattened his body like a rat.\u00a0 He didn\u2019t want to be in there.\u201d<\/p>\n

Today, life is back to normal for Cherry and her two cats.\u00a0 \u201cThey\u2019re pretty spoiled,\u201d she said.\u00a0 \u201cThey have lots of places to go, here and at the neighbors, I\u2019m sure.\u00a0 They share a big lot with possums, raccoons, rats and the occasional coyote.<\/p>\n

She doesn\u2019t see coyotes as a problem for Baby Kitty and Poofa, who previously lost a leg to surgery.\u00a0 \u201cI have amazing crows here who love the cats. After the surgery, a coyote came to eat cats on my property. Believe it or not, the crows went insane.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll of them descended on this area and I came out [wondering] what is all this ruckus? And they were telling me that the coyote was there, glaring at Baby Kitty and Baby Kitty was glaring back. I shooed the coyote off.\u00a0 It happened one other time. And I came out and sure enough there was a coyote here again.\u00a0 So the crows take care of the kitties and the kitties catch rats for them.\u201d<\/p>\n

She said that her cats are the welcoming committee for her clients who visit the office she built outside her house.\u00a0 And, she said, \u201cBabby Kitty loves to make me laugh.\u00a0 He\u2019s a funny creature and he has personality.\u00a0 He loves to play tag.\u00a0 He wants you to pet him and if you try to step away, he\u2019ll reach around \u2013 without claws \u2013 and whack you, like you\u2019ve got to pet him some more.\u00a0 It\u2019s a game.\u201d<\/p>\n
