Sadly, mostly bad news. Here is a review of pet food for 2018.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"entry-info entry-single-info\">\n<div class=\"entry-content animation-lazyload\">\n<h2>January 2018<\/h2>\n<p>In early January of 2018, we learned that\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/truthaboutpetfood.com\/concerning-change-for-human-grade-pet-food\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"industry hired a representative (opens in a new tab)\">industry hired a representative<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0who submitted a proposal to AAFCO hoping to weaken the legal requirements of a human grade pet food. No decision has been made by AAFCO at year\u2019s end.<\/p>\n<p>January also gave us some\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/truthaboutpetfood.com\/purina-says-by-products-are-nutrient-rich\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"misleading marketing published by Purina (opens in a new tab)\">misleading marketing published by Purina<\/a><\/strong>; highlighting the serious need for pet owners to have public access to pet food ingredient definitions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Recalls in January 2018:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/truthaboutpetfood.com\/just-food-for-dogs-pet-food-recall\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Just Food for Dogs (opens in a new tab)\">Just Food for Dogs<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0cooked dog food \u2013\u00a0<em>Listeria monocytogenes.<\/em>\u00a0This was a pet food recall that led to a human food recall (first in history) \u2013\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/truthaboutpetfood.com\/a-first-pet-food-recall-leads-to-human-food-recall\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"the pet food caught the problem, human food did not (opens in a new tab)\">the pet food caught the problem, human food did not<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>February 2018<\/h2>\n<p>February 2018 brought news of more pentobarbital in pet food. Washington DC television station\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/truthaboutpetfood.com\/pentobarbital-found-in-gravy-train-dog-food\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"WJLA News (opens in a new tab)\">WJLA News<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0tested 62 samples of dog food.\u00a0<em>\u201cAfter months of tests and re-tests, one brand repeatedly came back positive for pentobarbital. In total, we tested 15 cans of Gravy Train. Nine cans \u2014 60-percent of the sample \u2014 were positive for pentobarbital.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0And following the news of pentobarbital in Gravy Train, a\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/truthaboutpetfood.com\/lawsuit-filed-against-big-heart-brand-gravy-train\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"class action lawsuit (opens in a new tab)\">class action lawsuit<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0was filed against manufacturer Big Heart Brands\/J.M. Smucker.<\/p>\n<p>In February, TruthaboutPetFood.com provided\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/truthaboutpetfood.com\/a-comparison-fda-response-to-pet-illness-and-death-linked-to-kibble-and-raw-pet-food\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"a comparison to FDA's (opens in a new tab)\">a comparison to FDA\u2019s<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0handling of a kibble recall to a raw recall proving absolute bias by the agency.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/truthaboutpetfood.com\/general-mills-purchases-blue-buffalo-pet-food\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"General Mills purchased Blue Buffalo (opens in a new tab)\">General Mills purchased Blue Buffalo<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0pet food in February 2018 for an estimated 8 Billion dollars.<\/p>\n<p>We provided an in-depth look into the \u2018<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/truthaboutpetfood.com\/complete-and-balanced-maybe-maybe-not\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Complete and Balanced' pet food (opens in a new tab)\">Complete and Balanced\u2019 pet food<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0regulations \u2013 proving existing regulations could cause nutrient deficiency in pets.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Recalls in February 2018:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/truthaboutpetfood.com\/raws-for-paws-recalls-turkey-pet-food-because-of-possible-salmonella-health-risk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Raws for Paws  (opens in a new tab)\">Raws for Paws\u00a0<\/a><\/strong>raw pet food \u2013\u00a0<em>Salmonella<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/truthaboutpetfood.com\/smokehouse-pet-products-inc-recalls-limited-lots-of-beefy-munchies-because-of-possible-salmonella-contamination\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Smokehouse Pet Products, Inc. (opens in a new tab)\">Smokehouse Pet Products, Inc.<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0\u201cBeefy Munchies\u201d \u2013\u00a0<em>Salmonella<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/truthaboutpetfood.com\/redbarn-pet-products-issues-voluntary-recall-of-dog-chews\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Redbarn Pet Products, LLC (opens in a new tab)\">Redbarn Pet Products, LLC<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0Bully Stick three pack \u2013\u00a0<em>Salmonella<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/truthaboutpetfood.com\/darwins-dog-food-recall-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Darwin\u2019s Pet Food (opens in a new tab)\">Darwin\u2019s Pet Food<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0raw pet food \u2013\u00a0<em>Salmonella<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/truthaboutpetfood.com\/beefy-munchies-beefy-bites-expanded-fda-recall\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Smokehouse Pet Products (opens in a new tab)\">Smokehouse Pet Products<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0expanding recall Beefy Munchies\/Beefy Bites \u2013\u00a0<em>Salmonella<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/truthaboutpetfood.com\/trupet-llc-issues-voluntary-recall-of-certain-treat-me-crunchy-beef-delight-pet-treats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"TruPet, LLC (opens in a new tab)\">TruPet, LLC<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0topper \u2013\u00a0<em>Salmonella<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/truthaboutpetfood.com\/northwest-naturals-voluntarily-recalls-5lb-frozen-chicken-and-salmon-pet-food-chubs-because-of-possible-listeria-monocytogenes-health-risk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Northwest Naturals (opens in a new tab)\">Northwest Naturals<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0raw pet food \u2013\u00a0<em>Listeria monocytogenes<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/truthaboutpetfood.com\/carnivore-meat-company-issues-voluntary-recall-of-vital-essentials-freeze-dried-beef-nibblets-entree-for-dogs-pet-food\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Carnivore Meat Company (opens in a new tab)\">Carnivore Meat Company<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0raw pet food \u2013\u00a0<em>Salmonella<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h2>March 2018<\/h2>\n<p>In March of 2018, a pet owner who lives across the street from\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/truthaboutpetfood.com\/this-is-what-fda-and-department-of-agriculture-considers-food\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"a rendering facility (opens in a new tab)\">a rendering facility<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0provided us with horrific pictures of what FDA considers pet \u2018food\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/truthaboutpetfood.com\/the-first-state-to-address-part-of-the-problem-in-pet-food\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"State of Ohio (opens in a new tab)\">State of Ohio<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0stepped up in a big way in March of 2018 \u2013 with Representative Laura Lanese submitting a bill requiring pet food to be free from any euthanized animal including dogs and cats used as a pet food ingredient. Ohio is the first state to do this!<\/p>\n<p>We learned from\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/truthaboutpetfood.com\/as-soon-as-practical\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"a concerned veterinarian (opens in a new tab)\">a concerned veterinarian<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0that FDA does little to require pet foods to update labels after any ingredient change is made in that pet food. FDA told this veterinarian that pet food\u00a0<em>\u201cfirms should update labels as soon as practical. \u00a0The FDA does not provide a set timeframe.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In March of 2018, TruthaboutPetFood.com explained\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/truthaboutpetfood.com\/the-false-friends-of-pet-food-consumers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"the 'False Friends' of pet food labels (opens in a new tab)\">the \u2018False Friends\u2019 of pet food labels<\/a><\/strong>(misleading information on pet food labels and websites due to pet owners having no public access to pet food ingredient definitions). Also, TruthaboutPetFood.com explained how\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/truthaboutpetfood.com\/live-salmonella-or-dead-salmonella-both-cause-illness\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">FDA ignores the risk of dead bacteria<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0on pet food ingredients (ignores the certain risk of endotoxins).<\/p>\n<p>March 2018 brought a\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/truthaboutpetfood.com\/lawsuit-filed-against-champion-pet-food-acana-and-orijen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"class action lawsuit against Champion Pet Food (opens in a new tab)\">class action lawsuit against Champion Pet Food<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0for \u201c<em>False Advertising<\/em>\u201d, violations of \u201c<em>feed law<\/em>\u201d, and numerous other charges. And we learned of more\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/truthaboutpetfood.com\/deadly-chinese-jerky-treats-again\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"jerky treats imported from China (opens in a new tab)\">jerky treats imported from China<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0killing beloved pets. And we learned of\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/truthaboutpetfood.com\/mars-petcare-dog-food-linked-to-deadly-illness-in-australia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"pet deaths in Australia (opens in a new tab)\">pet deaths in Australia<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0linked to a Mars Petcare pet food.<\/p>\n<p>In March of 2018 we learned some good (great) news too. Dr. Karen Becker and Rodney Habib published the ground-breaking documentary\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/truthaboutpetfood.com\/its-so-much-more-than-a-dog-cancer-series\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"The Dog Cancer Series (opens in a new tab)\">The Dog Cancer Series<\/a><\/strong>. Smucker (opens in a new tab)\">J.M. Smucker<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0that the firm\u2019s previous action to withdraw products from the marketplace is now reclassified as a recall. A\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/truthaboutpetfood.com\/double-dose-of-pet-food-toxins\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"survey of mycotoxin risks (opens in a new tab)\">survey of mycotoxin risks<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0of grain ingredients in North America found 80% of grain samples tested contained two dangerous mycotoxins.<\/p>\n<p>FDA issued a\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/truthaboutpetfood.com\/warning-letter-to-darwins-includes-absurd-regulatory-bias\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Warning Letter to Darwin's Pet Food (opens in a new tab)\">Warning Letter to Darwin\u2019s Pet Food<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0that proved the agency enforces with a double standard \u2013 raw pet food is held to food law, all other styles of pet food are held to inferior \u2018feed\u2019 laws.<\/p>\n<p>We provided an in-depth look into<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/truthaboutpetfood.com\/how-the-system-works-against-pet-food-consumers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" the 'system' of influence (opens in a new tab)\">\u00a0the \u2018system\u2019 of influence<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0of pet food regulation.<\/p>\n<p>In April of 2018,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/truthaboutpetfood.com\/jm-smucker-to-purchase-ainsworth-pet-nutrition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"J.M. Smucker purchases Ainworth (opens in a new tab)\">J.M. Smucker purchases Ainworth<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0(Rachel Ray Nutrish) pet food.\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/truthaboutpetfood.com\/china-complains-about-honest-kitchen-pet-food-no-chinese-ingredients\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"China complained (opens in a new tab)\">China complained<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0that Honest Kitchen\u2019s \u2018No Chinese Ingredients\u2019 marketing was offensive. But \u2013 Amazon could not provide answers to basic questions of their new products. Also in May, we learned that industry events are talking about us\u2026<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-15367\" (opens in a new tab)\">Radagast Pet Food, Inc.<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0raw pet food \u2013 Listeria monocytogenes and E. coli O121.<\/p>\n<h2>August 2018<\/h2>\n<p>In August 2018 we\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/truthaboutpetfood.com\/is-change-in-pet-food-a-good-thing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"compared the ingredients of brands of pet food (opens in a new tab)\">compared the ingredients of brands of pet food<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0from past to present. We exposed the\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/truthaboutpetfood.com\/an-unbelievable-conflict-of-interest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"significant conflict of interest (opens in a new tab)\">significant conflict of interest<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0of law making abilities of three public universities (in Kentucky, Indiana and Texas) that receive donations from Big Pet Food.<\/p>\n<p>Also in August we saw a class action\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/truthaboutpetfood.com\/solid-gold-pet-food-class-action-lawsuit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"lawsuit filed against Solid Gold (opens in a new tab)\">lawsuit filed against Solid Gold<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0pet food claiming\u00a0<em>\u201cfraudulent and negligent misrepresentation\u201d<\/em>. We learned that a\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/truthaboutpetfood.com\/how-can-this-be-allowed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"licensed &quot;dead animal hauler&quot; (opens in a new tab)\">licensed \u201c<\/a><\/strong><em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/truthaboutpetfood.com\/how-can-this-be-allowed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"licensed &quot;dead animal hauler&quot; (opens in a new tab)\">dead animal hauler<\/a><\/strong><\/em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/truthaboutpetfood.com\/how-can-this-be-allowed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"licensed &quot;dead animal hauler&quot; (opens in a new tab)\">\u201c<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0(that picks up euthanized animals) is also a pet food manufacturer.<\/p>\n<p>We learned that\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/truthaboutpetfood.com\/millions-of-drowned-decomposing-livestock-animals-allowed-to-be-rendered\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"millions of drown livestock animals (opens in a new tab)\">millions of drown livestock animals<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0from Hurricane Florence were welcomed as pet food ingredients.<\/p>\n<p>We learned that\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/truthaboutpetfood.com\/fda-admits-pentobarbital-in-pet-food-more-of-a-problem-than-originally-thought\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"FDA told an industry audience (opens in a new tab)\">FDA told an industry audience<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0pentobarbital in pet food is more of a problem than they realized; \u201c<em>new evidence suggests that the problem may be more pervasive than originally thought<\/em>.\u201d In a later update to pet owners about the risk of pentobarbital in pet food,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/truthaboutpetfood.com\/fda-says-sorry-we-dont-have-the-budget-to-enforce-law\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"FDA said they just don't have the money to enforce law (opens in a new tab)\">FDA said they just don\u2019t have the money to enforce law<\/a><\/strong>; \u201c<em>Due to competing priorities and resource limitations, government agencies cannot act against every violation of the law.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In September of 2018 we learned that\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/truthaboutpetfood.com\/the-most-recent-fda-betrayal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"FDA is ONLY working with Big Pet Feed (opens in a new tab)\">FDA is ONLY working with Big Pet Feed<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0to aid in the investigation of Grain-Free pet food link to canine heart disease. This website sent multiple requests to FDA on how pet owners can help \u2013 all were ignored.\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/truthaboutpetfood.com\/investigating-the-grain-free-link-to-heart-disease-with-blinders-on\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Scientists aiding in the investigation (opens in a new tab)\">Scientists aiding in the investigation<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0continue to provide misleading information to pet owners claiming \u201c<em>Grains have not been linked to any health problems except in the very rare situation when a pet has an allergy to a specific grain.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0They ignored the certain risk of mycotoxins.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Recalls in September 2018<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/truthaboutpetfood.com\/steves-real-food-voluntarily-recall\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Steve\u2019s Real Food (opens in a new tab)\">Steve\u2019s Real Food<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0raw pet food \u2013\u00a0<em>Salmonella and\/or L. mono<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/truthaboutpetfood.com\/bravo-recalls-performance-dog-raw-pet-food-because-of-possible-salmonella-health-risk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Bravo Packing, Inc. (opens in a new tab)\">Bravo Packing, Inc.<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0raw pet food \u2013\u00a0<em>Salmonella<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h2>October 2018<\/h2>\n<p>October 2018 brought devastating news to pet owners. The pet food safety laws that were written to prevent another deadly recall like the one in 2007 were\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/truthaboutpetfood.com\/a-pet-food-betrayal-like-none-other\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"simply erased from record by Congress (opens in a new tab)\">simply erased from record by Congress<\/a><\/strong>. In November \u2013 listed below \u2013 we learned the name of the one Senator that destroyed pet food safety.<\/p>\n<p>We learned that a raw pet food manufacturer was forced to close its doors due to multiple recalls. FDA didn\u2019t respond until December stating \u201c<em>Over the past few months, we have received several similar requests for meetings.
