Hill\u2019s Pet Nutrition is facing a slew of consumer lawsuits linked to their January 2019 excess Vitamin D recalls.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Filed on February 26, 2019 in the Central District of California, pet owners versus Hill\u2019s Pet Nutrition; a class action lawsuit. The lawsuit states they bring this suit against Hill\u2019s for (bold added):<\/p>\n

\u201ctheir negligent, reckless, and\/or intentional practice of misrepresenting,\u00a0failing to test for<\/strong>, and failing to fully disclose the presence of\u00a0toxic levels of Vitamin D<\/strong>\u00a0in their Contaminated Dog Foods (defined below) and for selling Contaminated Dog Foods that are adulterated and do not conform to the labels, packaging, advertising, and statements throughout the United States<\/em>.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This particular lawsuit asks that Hill\u2019s Pet Nutrition\u00a0be required to<\/strong>\u00a0test \u201call ingredients and final products for such substances<\/em>\u201d (such as excess Vitamin D) and asks for pet owner financial relief in the same amount\u00a0Hill\u2019s offered veterinarians<\/a>in a previous announcement; \u201coffer Plaintiff and the proposed class $500 vouchers for each can of Contaminated Food as they have offered veterinarians and (iv) restoring monies to the members of the proposed Class<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

This lawsuit quotes several claims from the Hill\u2019s website including these two (that the recall proved are not accurate claims<\/strong>):<\/p>\n

(g) \u201cWe conduct final safety checks daily on every Hill\u2019s pet food
\nproduct to help ensure the safety of your pet\u2019s food.\u201d
\n(h) \u201cAdditionally, all finished products are physically inspected and
\ntested for key nutrients prior to release to help ensure your pet gets a consistent product bag to bag.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The lawsuit also includes a quote from the FDA alert on the many excess Vitamin D recalls; (bold added for emphasis) \u201cVitamin D, when consumed at very high levels, can lead to serious health issues in dogs\u00a0including renal dysfunction<\/strong><\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Represented (among others) in this lawsuit is the owner of \u201cTaki, a chihuahua mix<\/em>\u201d who consumed the toxic Hill\u2019s dog food starting in November of 2018. Taki died of renal failure in February 2019.<\/p>\n

In another of the seven lawsuits filed against Hill\u2019s \u2013 Stella, a dachshund rescue from Florida \u2013 consumed just six cans of Hill\u2019s i\/d dog food. On January 26, 2019 she was in total kidney failure and had to be euthanized.<\/p>\n

Another lawsuit appears to say that Hill\u2019s had a Vitamin D problem much earlier and in their dry dog foods (similar to the excess Vitamin D recalls of other brands previous to Hill\u2019s recall); (bold added) \u201cAs a result of online consumer complaints,\u00a0Hill\u2019s thus knew or should have known of the elevated vitamin D levels in the Specialty Dog Foods by at least February of 2018<\/strong><\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the lawsuit quoted above, Duncan \u2013 a seizure alert trained service dog \u2013 died on January 12, 2019. Taco died on January 24, 2019. Lily died on November 27, 2019.<\/p>\n

All of the above heart breaking pet deaths are just a tiny glimpse into the destruction this toxic pet food caused.<\/p>\n

The price a pet food manufacturer pays for NOT properly testing ingredients: 7 class action lawsuits.<\/p>\n

The price a pet owner pays for a reckless manufacturer that doesn\u2019t properly test ingredients: painful illness and death of their pet.<\/p>\n

Nothing has changed since the 2007 pet food recall.<\/strong>\u00a0In 2007, Hill\u2019s issued 3 recalls for melamine contaminated pet food. No pet food manufacturer in 2007 bothered to test or validate the quality of vegetable protein ingredients (such as wheat gluten) in advance of using those ingredients in their pet foods. Those ingredients were later found to be contaminated with melamine \u2013 responsible for killing thousands of dogs and cats. Fast forward 12 years,\u00a0AGAIN \u2013 Hill\u2019s did not test ingredients<\/strong>\u00a0or validate ingredient quality.<\/p>\n

How many pet\u2019s have to die until each and every pet food manufacturer tests and validates the quality of ingredients?<\/p>\n
