{"id":3732,"date":"2019-05-15T18:24:36","date_gmt":"2019-05-16T01:24:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.animalhealthfoundation.net\/blog\/?p=3732"},"modified":"2023-04-19T16:48:07","modified_gmt":"2023-04-19T23:48:07","slug":"angel-fund-helps-save-life-of-feral-cat-trapped-in-attic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.animalhealthfoundation.org\/blog\/2019\/05\/angel-fund-helps-save-life-of-feral-cat-trapped-in-attic\/","title":{"rendered":"Angel Fund Helps Save Life  of Feral Cat Trapped in Attic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.animalhealthfoundation.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Delilah.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-3733\" src=\"https:\/\/www.animalhealthfoundation.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Delilah.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"347\" height=\"260\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.animalhealthfoundation.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Delilah.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.animalhealthfoundation.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Delilah-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 347px) 100vw, 347px\" \/><\/a>Sandra Schuelke is a person who cares about animals and the place where she lives.<\/p>\n<p>She and her sister Sherry spearheaded an effort a few years ago to capture and neuter a growing population of feral cats in the gated, single-family condo development where they live in El Monte.<\/p>\n<p>The project did not have the full support of everyone in the homeowners association.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt took some time to get some of the neighbors on board,\u201d Sandra said.\u00a0 \u201cThey didn\u2019t understand the program at first.\u00a0 They thought that trapping them and removing them was the answer.\u00a0 But research shows that you need a stable control group and every time you remove animals there is a vacuum effect and more will come in from the outside.\u00a0 The stable colony keeps outsiders out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since the effort began, she said, \u201cwe have trapped, neutered and released 45 adult cats.\u00a0 We have been doing this for five years.\u00a0 We have rescued 47 kittens and all of them have been put up for adoption through three different rescue operations. \u00a0I walk through the complex every day and keep an eye on \u2018em and make sure there are no new ones.\u00a0 That\u2019s my daily volunteer work.\u00a0 All the cats have been fixed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve gone through two kitten seasons with no new litters and we\u2019re coming up on our third.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The colony does not cause any problems in the housing complex and is not especially visible, she said.\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cThe cats all have their places.\u00a0 We have 142 homes in our complex so it\u2019s about one cat for every three houses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A bit more than a year ago, however, that tranquility was broken.\u00a0 \u00a0One of the feral cats was missing and a neighbor reported that she was hearing the animal\u2019s cries constantly from somewhere behind her house near the home of another community member.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe searched high and low, in bushes, in peoples\u2019 attics and garages, underneath patios \u2013 everywhere,\u201d Sandra said.\u00a0 \u201cWe didn\u2019t find her but we kept hearing her voice from different places.\u201d\u00a0 The James family was particularly helpful in the search, she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt one point I called the fire department because we thought the cat was in one of the homes.\u00a0 The people in the house got really upset and wouldn\u2019t let the firemen come into their house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A few weeks later, an electrician went into the attic of the house.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told the community handyman later that he had seen a cat there.\u00a0 So I went back to the house and begged them to let me put a trap in the attic.\u00a0 They let me do it.\u00a0 But there was no need for a trap.\u00a0 I was able to grab her.\u00a0 We immediately took her to Community Companion Animal Hospital in Temple City.\u00a0 She was severely dehydrated and weighed just 2.9 pounds. Her body temperature was 91 degrees. She was probably just hours from death.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The cat \u2013 The James Family named her Delilah \u2013 had been trapped in the attic for about five weeks without food or water.\u00a0 Sandra believes Delilah may have been frightened by painters and went down a ventilation pipe from the roof and fell into the attic.<\/p>\n<p>The hospital immediately put Delilah on IV fluids and antibiotics and started feeding her with a syringe. She was in the hospital two weeks before she was released.<\/p>\n<p>Sandra expressed her appreciation for the efforts of Dr. Joseph Pavlik, Dr. Joni Nasser, Dr. Neil Bodie and the hospital staff: \u201cThey were compassionate and they never gave up on her.\u00a0 All the help from the hospital and Angel Fund was just wonderful.\u00a0 I couldn\u2019t have done it without everybody coming together.\u201d Angel Fund contributed $250 to Delilah\u2019s care and so did the hospital. \u00a0Sandra paid the remainder of the bill.<\/p>\n<p>Today Delilah has not forgotten her feral roots.\u00a0 The cat lives in an enclosure in Sandra\u2019s bedroom.\u00a0 \u201cYou usually would see it outdoors, not inside.\u00a0 But it has two levels.\u00a0 When I go in for cleaning, she goes into her little hideaway.\u00a0 She can go there when she doesn\u2019t want to be bothered.\u00a0 When she wasn\u2019t feeling well, I could pet her but not so much now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sandra has two other cats but they do not have physical contact with Delilah.\u00a0 \u201cThey are face to face with her, through the wire so they are getting familiar with one another.\u00a0 I\u2019d love it if she were friendly.\u00a0 But she is who she is and I\u2019m happy that she\u2019s alive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sure she is still traumatized from being stuck in that attic for so long and being in the hospital,\u201d Sandra said.\u00a0 She is hopeful that over time Delilah will become more friendly with her and her other cats and be fully integrated into the household.<\/p>\n<p>Sandra \u2013 who works in health care administration in Pasadena \u2013 lives with her daughter, Rachel, who will be going to college in the fall, and her mother, Linda.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sandra Schuelke is a person who cares about animals and the place where she lives.
