{"id":3968,"date":"2020-03-06T22:14:48","date_gmt":"2020-03-07T06:14:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.animalhealthfoundation.net\/blog\/?p=3968"},"modified":"2023-04-19T16:35:44","modified_gmt":"2023-04-19T23:35:44","slug":"cody-returns-with-help-from-angel-fund","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.animalhealthfoundation.org\/blog\/2020\/03\/cody-returns-with-help-from-angel-fund\/","title":{"rendered":"Cody Returns with Help from Angel Fund"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.animalhealthfoundation.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Cody.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3969\" src=\"https:\/\/www.animalhealthfoundation.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Cody.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"164\" height=\"250\" \/><\/a>Late one Monday afternoon in December, 2016, Scott Rosenthal and his wife Christina, patted their dog Cody and left their Lancaster home for a Bible study class at their church in Woodland Hills.<\/p>\n<p>When they returned later that evening, Cody \u201ccame walking up to me,\u201d Scott said, \u201cbut she couldn\u2019t put any weight on her right front foot.\u00a0 It was just flopping around and I was like, \u2018Oh oh!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cody loved to chase rabbits but it didn\u2019t look like she had gotten out of the Rosenthal\u2019s 1.6-acre yard.\u00a0 Scott thought she may have stepped in a gopher hole.\u00a0 The dog is a beautiful Labrador mix and she was in a lot of pain.\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cShe laid down and I couldn\u2019t get her up,\u201d Scott said.\u00a0 \u201cShe\u2019s not that big, about 50 pounds.\u00a0 I had to get a blanket and roll her onto it to move her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Scott called Dr. Wendy Brooks, who owns Mar Vista Animal Medical Center.\u00a0 She is an old family friend and Scott has always taken his animals to her \u2013 even though it is more than an hour\u2019s drive away.\u00a0 Because of his work schedule, he was unable to take Cody to the hospital the next day.\u00a0 \u201cOnce I got her there, they made her comfortable and they [examined her] and decided what they needed to do,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Brooks determined that Cody needed a titanium bone plate for her fractured radius.\u00a0 Scott, who works as a mechanic on the vehicle fleet at Oaks Christian Camp and Conference Center, \u201cwas a little low on cash\u201d at the time, he said, and he was fearful that he might have to put Cody down.<\/p>\n<p>But he called Care Credit and obtained a loan.\u00a0 And the staff at the hospital suggested applying to Angel Fund.\u00a0 He did and was granted $500, a sum matched by the hospital, which also provided $350 from client donations.<\/p>\n<p>The surgery cost $1,800 but the hospital boarded Cody for about three months.\u00a0 Scott\u2019s total cost, he said, was $440. \u201cThere was care at the hospital and some of that was donated,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd I worked on one of their vehicles and that was bartered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And, he said, his neighbors, Don and Paul Eaton \u2013 Don was a special friend of Cody \u2013 gave him $350 to help pay the dog\u2019s medical bills.\u00a0 \u201cHe put the money in my hand and he said, \u2018We\u2019ll put it toward that.\u2019\u00a0 And I was like, \u2018You\u2019re kidding me!\u2019 He\u2019s a brother in Christ and he realized there was a need,\u201d Scott said.\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cIt all worked out.\u00a0 It was an amazing blessing.\u201d\u00a0 He and Christina are grateful to Angel Fund, the hospital and the Eaton brothers.\u00a0 \u201cThere\u2019s God all over this thing,\u201d Scott said.<\/p>\n<p>Today, Cody is doing well at 11 years of age.\u00a0 For the first six months after her surgery, Dr. Brooks was concerned \u201cbecause the operation didn\u2019t quite take,\u201d Scott said, and because of the possibility of infection.\u00a0 But those concerns now are long gone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCody has settled down a little bit and is not so active as she once was,\u201d he said.\u00a0 \u201cThe leg isn\u2019t as strong as it was but she uses it just fine.\u00a0 She wants to jump around like a puppy so we have to keep an eye on her.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Late one Monday afternoon in December, 2016, Scott Rosenthal and his wife Christina, patted their dog Cody and left their Lancaster home for a Bible study class at their church in Woodland Hills.
