{"id":3979,"date":"2020-03-20T21:44:06","date_gmt":"2020-03-21T04:44:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.animalhealthfoundation.net\/blog\/?p=3979"},"modified":"2023-04-19T16:35:29","modified_gmt":"2023-04-19T23:35:29","slug":"angel-fund-grant-helps-dog-deal-with-congenital-problem","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.animalhealthfoundation.org\/blog\/2020\/03\/angel-fund-grant-helps-dog-deal-with-congenital-problem\/","title":{"rendered":"Angel Fund Grant Helps Dog Deal With Congenital Problem"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.animalhealthfoundation.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/af1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-3980\" src=\"https:\/\/www.animalhealthfoundation.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/af1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"217\" height=\"167\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.animalhealthfoundation.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/af1.jpg 625w, https:\/\/www.animalhealthfoundation.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/af1-300x231.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 217px) 100vw, 217px\" \/><\/a>Tyler Davis and Spritzer, his 13-year-old Toy Fox Terrier, had been through a lot together.\u00a0 \u201cHe was just as spry as he could be,\u201d Tyler said.\u00a0 But then the seven-pound dog started having problems.<\/p>\n<p>Tyler took him to <strong>Fairview Pet Hospital in Costa Mesa<\/strong>. \u00a0Dr. Hongwon Kang told him that he believed Spritzer had a congenital condition that is common in the breed.\u00a0 He said that he needed an x-ray to confirm the diagnosis.<\/p>\n<p>But Tyler, who recently had been homeless, did not have the money to pay the bill.\u00a0 The doctor suggested that Angel Fund could help.\u00a0 Tyler applied but it was about three weeks before he received the grant.\u00a0 In the meantime, Spritzer\u2019s condition worsened.<\/p>\n<p>Tyler did research online and knew what medications were recommended for treatment.\u00a0 The condition includes a collapsed trachea and an enlarged heart.\u00a0 \u201cIt makes it increasingly hard for the dog to breath,\u201d Tyler said. But Dr. Kang did not want to prescribe the drugs, he said, until he could take x-rays to confirm the condition.<\/p>\n<p>When Tyler was informed that his grant had been approved, he was ecstatic.\u00a0 He took Spritzer to the hospital and x-rays were taken.\u00a0 Tyler obtained the medications and began giving them to his dog.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAngel Fund was a life-saver but the x-rays showed that Spritzer\u2019s enlarged heart was really big and was already pushing his trachea,\u201d Tyler said.\u00a0 \u201cHe would stand up and then he would fall over because he would black out.\u00a0 Two weeks earlier, he was chasing squirrels.\u00a0 He went from that to falling over.\u00a0 It killed me.\u201de H<\/p>\n<p>It had become increasingly clear that Spritzer was nearing the end of his life.\u00a0 \u201cI watched for a couple of weeks and I just couldn\u2019t take it. Finally, my two sons came over and got me and Spritzer and took us to the vet.\u00a0 Spritzer was staring into my eyes and I was bawling, man!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was about a month after the dog had begun taking the medications that he was put down.<\/p>\n<p>Tyler had a good job as a successful real estate agent but he plunged into homelessness after a real estate deal went sour during the Great Recession of 2007-08 that was caused by subprime mortgages and a housing bubble.\u00a0 He had two young sons, now both financially successful at ages 24 and 22.\u00a0 The family was helped by the Illumination Foundation, an Orange County nonprofit that provides aid to those without shelter.\u00a0\u00a0 And they lived for a time in a \u201cbig storage unit\u201d that Tyler made into a temporary home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe homeless thing is like a black hole, Tyler said.\u00a0 \u201cYou\u2019re almost climbing out and then the thread breaks and you go all the way back down to the bottom.\u00a0 I had a resume as long as my arm but nobody would hire me.\u00a0 I raised my two boys by myself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tyler lived in his car for a time and later was able to buy a recreational vehicle, that is still his home.\u00a0 He also went back to school and earned a graphic arts degree. \u00a0He believes that triggered his recovery from homelessness. While in school, he did a graphic picture of Spritzer on his computer.<\/p>\n<p>In 2009, he started repairing auto windshields.\u00a0 The small business \u201cwas just keeping me alive for a while\u201d but now is doing well.\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s been pretty good these last six months,\u201d he said. \u201cI get a lot of calls for window replacement, which I don\u2019t do, but I\u2019m thinking about expanding my business to include that.\u00a0 I could go do a workshop or hire somebody who knows how to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tyler said that he didn\u2019t want to get another dog after Spritzer died.\u00a0 \u201cBut now we\u2019ve got Peanut, a small white Chihuahua.\u00a0 \u201cHe\u2019s a menace, 24\/7.
