\"\"<\/a>In the fall of 2017, a young Laguna Niguel family had a sick dog on its hands.\u00a0 Rikku, a shepard mix, had been in the family for some 13 years and was loved by mom and dad and two young children.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

\u201cShe had been sick for a few months,\u201d Lindsay, the mother, said in an interview.\u00a0 (She asked that her last name not be used.)\u00a0 \u201cWe were unsure of the cause.\u00a0 At first we thought it might be behavioral. But then . . . she started having potty accidents in the house, which was so unusual for her.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe took her to the vet [Dr. Rachel Tuz at Aliso Niguel Animal Hospital].\u00a0 After a few visits and really no conclusive idea what the diagnosis was, we shrugged our shoulders and decided, \u2018Well, she\u2019s 13 years old and pushing 14, should we even pursue this any further?\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cThe doctor had suggested a couple of other tests,\u201d Lindsay said. \u201cAt that point, we had run dry on money.\u201d\u00a0 But Dr. Tuz called and said that Angel Fund might be able to help.\u00a0 Lindsay successfully submitted an application with the hospital\u2019s help. \u201cThey did the tests and found that she had a massive tumor in her bladder.\u00a0 And it was basically inoperable.\u00a0 There was nothing we could do about it.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u201dWe didn\u2019t know what to do next, other than wait it out,\u201d Lindsay said. \u201cThe next few months the dog got worse quickly and was losing weight, two pounds or more a month.\u00a0 And we finally reached the point where Dr. Tuz said that this wasn\u2019t fair to Rikku. She was not able to be in the house because she was having so many accidents.\u00a0 So we had to choose to put her down.\u00a0 That was in November.\u201d<\/p>\n

The experience was wrenching for all the family.\u00a0 \u201cMy husband, Ryan, and I had owned her since we were kids,\u201d Lindsay said.\u00a0 \u201cIt was very hard. \u00a0\u201cMy son, Finnegan, was very sad.\u00a0 He still is.\u00a0 He still talks about her.\u201d\u00a0 He is five years old.\u00a0 She and her husband also have a two-year-old daughter, Molly, is two.<\/p>\n

The family got a new dog \u2013 a puppy \u2013 in January.\u00a0 \u201cWe were going to wait but Finnegan kept saying he missed not having a dog,\u201d Lindsay said.\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s different, though.\u00a0 The new dog doesn\u2019t replace the dog you had.\u00a0 They\u2019re just totally different personalities.\u201d<\/p>\n

Angel Fund was \u201cfantastic,\u201d Lindsay said, and she wrote a thank you letter to the fund after receiving the grant. \u00a0\u201cThey helped us in a serious time of need.\u00a0 It\u2019s hard when your pet is sick and you feel like you can\u2019t do anything else about it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lindsay had opted to be a stay-at-home mom after her first child was born.\u00a0 And she and Ryan felt financially overburdened, she said, with a mortgage, two young children and hefty student loans for two college educations.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
