All four of the animal\u2019s paw pads had been burned and he was unable to walk on his own.<\/p>\n<p>After tranquilizing the bear, officials transported him to the Wildlife Investigations Laboratory in Rancho Cordova, where he was evaluated by Fish and Wildlife veterinarians Deana Clifford and Emma Lantz. His lungs were damaged from smoke inhalation, his paws were badly burned and he had a minor eye injury.<\/p>\n<div class=\"enhancement\" data-align-center=\"\">\n<figure class=\"figure\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/ca-times.brightspotcdn.com\/dims4\/default\/2d16ebd\/2147483647\/strip\/true\/crop\/2000x1126+0+0\/resize\/840x473!\/quality\/90\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fcalifornia-times-brightspot.s3.amazonaws.com%2F0a%2F39%2Fed8ab7594fbfbaeb94c6334187e1%2Fla-me-bear-released04.JPG\" alt=\"A 10-year-old black bear was burned in the North Complex fire.\" width=\"261\" height=\"147\" data-src=\"https:\/\/ca-times.brightspotcdn.com\/dims4\/default\/2d16ebd\/2147483647\/strip\/true\/crop\/2000x1126+0+0\/resize\/840x473!\/quality\/90\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fcalifornia-times-brightspot.s3.amazonaws.com%2F0a%2F39%2Fed8ab7594fbfbaeb94c6334187e1%2Fla-me-bear-released04.JPG\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"figure-content\">\n<div class=\"figure-caption\"><em>California Department of Fish and Wildlife veterinarian Emma Lantz sutures sterilized tilapia skins onto the burned paw pads of a black bear, after medications had been applied.\u00a0<\/em><\/div>\n<div class=\"figure-credit\"><em>(Kirsten Macintyre \/ Department of Fish and Wildlife)<\/em><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Paw pad injuries are common for animals in wildfires, Clifford said, noting that when the tender tissue is damaged, it can present significant problems.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s the challenge,\u201d she said. \u201cIf they can\u2019t walk, they can\u2019t find water and they can\u2019t find prey. &#8230; They become stuck.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The bear\u2019s rescue was the result of a partnership between the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, which banded together in the midst of\u00a0<a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2020-10-04\/california-fire-season-record-4-million-acres-burned\">California\u2019s worst-ever wildfire season<\/a>\u00a0to find and treat animals injured by flames. Dubbed the Wildfire Disaster Network, the group comprises veterinarians, wildlife biologists, ecologists, trained animal care volunteers and rehabilitation centers.<\/p>\n<div class=\"enhancement\" data-align-center=\"\">\n<div class=\"promo-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"promo-media\">Under the direction of Jamie Peyton, the chief of service at UC Davis\u2019 Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, the bear was given a suite of treatments, including pain medication, fluids, infrared lasers and anti-inflammatory salve. The animal also received an innovative treatment involving the use of tilapia skins as natural bandages for its paw pads.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Afterward, he was kept in a quiet enclosure for several days and monitored around-the-clock with a remote camera. The bear\u2019s appetite remained healthy throughout recovery, and he even put on weight, but officials were eager to take him home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are free-ranging animals that have never been in a cage,\u201d Clifford said, \u201cand so this is not an ideal situation for them. What is ideal is for us to get them back in the wild.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"enhancement\" data-align-center=\"\">\n<div class=\"promo-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"promo-media\">On Oct. 5, staff deemed the bear ready for release, and wildlife biologist Henry Lomeli transported him back to Butte County. Lomeli chose a site within 25 miles of his home range but safe from the wildfire\u2019s path.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The bear quickly ran back into the wilderness and even managed to pull off his tracking collar along the way.<\/p>\n<p>He was the first of several animal patients this year. The Wildfire Disaster Network is now treating a female mountain lion from the\u00a0<a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2020-09-20\/bobcat-fire-update-100-000-acres-la-county\">Bobcat fire<\/a>\u00a0in Los Angles County that arrived on Sept. 21, and a 520-pound bear from the\u00a0<a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2020-09-29\/california-fire-that-killed-3-explodes-as-firefighters-struggle-with-lack-of-resources\">Zogg fire<\/a>\u00a0in Shasta County that arrived Sept. 30.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s likely that we will receive more wildlife with burns,\u201d Clifford said. \u201cWe are only halfway through the regular
