{"id":4531,"date":"2022-05-08T12:40:09","date_gmt":"2022-05-08T19:40:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.animalhealthfoundation.org\/blog\/?p=4531"},"modified":"2022-05-08T12:40:10","modified_gmt":"2022-05-08T19:40:10","slug":"with-help-from-angel-fund-paloma-survives-pyometra","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.animalhealthfoundation.org\/blog\/2022\/05\/with-help-from-angel-fund-paloma-survives-pyometra\/","title":{"rendered":"With Help From Angel Fund, Paloma Survives Pyometra"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.animalhealthfoundation.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Pulse-Paloma-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4532\" width=\"230\" height=\"230\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>One day in February, Omar Navarro\u2019s Poodle was \u201cperfect\u201d and the next day she was panting and uncomfortable.&nbsp; \u201cIt was weird because it wasn\u2019t even hot, he said.&nbsp; \u2018The next day, she was doing the same thing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;\u201cMy mom said that this was not normal,\u201d he said.&nbsp; He decided he should call Little Tokyo Pet Clinic where he had always taken his dog when she needed care.&nbsp; But the hospital had no appointments available that day.&nbsp; The receptionist suggested taking her to an emergency clinic.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Omar tried several emergency clinics but got a call a couple of hours later from the Little Tokyo hospital:&nbsp; an appointment time was available.&nbsp; Omar quickly took her there.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Mary H. Chung examined Paloma and told Omar that his dog was very ill.&nbsp; \u201cShe said it was bad,\u201d he said.&nbsp; \u201cPaloma needed surgery real quick or she would get sicker.\u201d&nbsp; Dr. Chung said that the dog had suspect pyometra with mammary gland tumors, acute diabetes and pancreatitis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Later that day, Paloma had the surgery.&nbsp; Dr. Chung removed her uterus and multiple mammary masses.&nbsp;&nbsp; She also suggested that Omar apply for an Angel Fund grant to help pay the cost of the surgery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Omar, 28, lives with his parents and three siblings not far from Little Tokyo.&nbsp; He went home and applied online for a grant of $500.&nbsp; It was soon approved.&nbsp; But Dr. Chung messaged the SCVMA Board of Trustees and asked for an additional grant of $500.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPaloma is a special girl who came to us yesterday with heavy panting and required immediate treatment, including surgery and hospitalization,\u201d she said.&nbsp; \u201cThe owner is struggling to cover costs and we\u2019d like to help as much as possible.\u201d&nbsp; Little Tokyo Pet Clinic donated $500 and supported necessary services and medications to assist Paloma\u2019s treatment and recovery, Dr. Chung said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his application, Omar said:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPaloma is not just any dog.&nbsp; She was a special dog when I first found her when she was only a baby.&nbsp; We became best friends. She means the world to me.&nbsp; She follows me everywhere I go. &nbsp;We have that special bond and I love her very much. I\u2019m always taking care of her [when there is] any type of danger. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNow she\u2019s sick and my heart is hurting me so much.&nbsp; I\u2019m tearing up all the time.&nbsp; She needs surgery that is costing $4,800 and, if she doesn\u2019t get it, I will lose her.&nbsp; I can\u2019t lose my best friend.&nbsp; She\u2019s my companionship.&nbsp; I\u2019m asking if you\u2019re able to help with some funds for my best friend.&nbsp; I\u2019m trying to find money wherever I can.&nbsp; I\u2019m not working fulltime.&nbsp; I\u2019m self-employed but not making enough money.&nbsp; Please help me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The additional $500 was approved.&nbsp; Omar\u2019s family provided the rest of the money needed for Paloma\u2019s treatment. &nbsp;When he learned he had received $1,000 from Angel Fund, Omar was grateful.&nbsp; \u201cI was happy.&nbsp; I was blessed,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Omar found Paloma on the street when she was a puppy nearly 12 years ago.&nbsp; Is Paloma doing well now?&nbsp; \u201cYeah, perfect,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He works Saturdays and Sundays at a swap meet selling inserts for \u201cCroc\u201d sandals that provide them with a dash of color through the holes in the footwear.&nbsp; \u201cIt makes them look fancy,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One day in February, Omar
