{"id":4856,"date":"2024-02-25T16:42:37","date_gmt":"2024-02-26T00:42:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.animalhealthfoundation.org\/blog\/?p=4856"},"modified":"2024-02-25T16:44:49","modified_gmt":"2024-02-26T00:44:49","slug":"angel-fund-helps-puppy-stricken-by-parvovirus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.animalhealthfoundation.org\/blog\/2024\/02\/angel-fund-helps-puppy-stricken-by-parvovirus\/","title":{"rendered":"Angel Fund Helps Puppy Stricken by Parvovirus"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.animalhealthfoundation.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/C89F51FA8CB74818A1C54752B0AFA1F8-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4857\" style=\"width:179px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Victoria Romero, a young graphic design student, had wanted a dog since she was eight or nine years old.\u00a0 When she turned 16 a couple of years ago, she suggested to her mother that she give her a dog instead of a Sweet Sixteen party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her mother said no.&nbsp; \u201cSo I had never had another opportunity [to have her own dog] until now,\u201d she said. &nbsp;A friend of her Mom, who had a female Maltese-Poddle mix puppy, wanted to find someone who could take the dog off her hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Victoria took charge of Kona in mid-November.&nbsp; The dog was lethargic and she knew that the animal would need shots.&nbsp; \u201cSo I called the [Aliso Animal] hospital and made an appointment for the next day,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. David Bahou examined the dog and told Victoria that her new pet had parvovirus.&nbsp; \u201cThis is my first dog and I really wanted to be careful with her,\u201d she said.&nbsp; \u201cI was crying the whole time in the hospital because I thought maybe I had done something wrong.\u201d &nbsp;At the time, she had been Kona\u2019s owner only a couple of days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Bahou assured her that she was not at fault.&nbsp; \u201cHe said that Kona\u2019s symptoms would have started five to seven days after exposure so she had gotten the virus when she was with the previous owner,\u201d Victoria said. &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But there was another issue: paying for Kona\u2019s treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was very sad because I did not have the money I needed,\u201d Victoria said, \u201cand the only option was putting her down. I did not want to do that.&nbsp; I was already so attached to her.&nbsp; I loved her so much that I couldn\u2019t do that.&nbsp; I called my family and friends to invite them to give me a little bit each.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDr. Bahou and the hospital staff really wanted to help me,\u201d she said.&nbsp; \u201cWhen they told me about Angel Fund, I said let\u2019s do that.&nbsp; I just didn\u2019t want to see Kona get worse because she already was so lethargic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m really grateful for Angel Fund and what they did. It really helped me out.&nbsp; I hope other people can find out about Angel Fund.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Victoria, a student at Laguna College of Art and Design, works as a baby sitter for her mother and in a child day care role at a local school district.&nbsp; She expects to graduate from her program in the spring of 2025.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She heads to one of the schools in the district each work-day morning to help young students who participate in a pre-school program, she said.&nbsp; \u201cI work about an hour and a half,\u201d she said, \u201cgetting their minds awake for school.\u201d&nbsp; Then she returns home to supervise her two younger siblings while her mother works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her mother does house cleaning and some gardening work and manages a group of workers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kona who is now about five months old and weighs about three pounds, is doing well.&nbsp; \u201cShe\u2019s now about 100 percent,\u201d Victoria said.&nbsp; \u201cShe has been running around the house trying to steal our shoes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.animalhealthfoundation.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/D907380C18154EDDABB282DF396E2A9B.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4858\" style=\"width:169px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Victoria Romero, a young graphic design student, had wanted a dog since she was eight or nine years old.\u00a0 When she turned 16 a couple of years ago, she suggested to her mother that she give her a dog instead of a Sweet Sixteen party.
