{"id":745,"date":"2012-07-12T22:59:59","date_gmt":"2012-07-12T22:59:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.animalhealthfoundation.net\/blog\/?p=745"},"modified":"2012-07-12T22:59:59","modified_gmt":"2012-07-12T22:59:59","slug":"responsible-pet-ownership-from-american-veterinary-medical-association","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.animalhealthfoundation.org\/blog\/2012\/07\/responsible-pet-ownership-from-american-veterinary-medical-association\/","title":{"rendered":"Responsible pet ownership from American Veterinary Medical Association"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Owning a pet is a privilege, but the benefits of pet ownership come with responsibilities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Be a Responsible Pet Owner:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Commit\n<ul>\n<li>Avoid impulsive decisions when selecting a pet.<\/li>\n<li>Select a pet that&#8217;s suited to your home and lifestyle.<\/li>\n<li>Keep only the type and number of pets for which you can provide appropriate food, water, shelter, health care and companionship.<\/li>\n<li>Commit to the relationship for the life of your pet(s).<\/li>\n<li>Provide appropriate exercise and mental stimulation.<\/li>\n<li>Properly socialize and train your pet.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Invest\n<ul>\n<li>Recognize that pet ownership requires an investment of time and money.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure your pet receives preventive health care (vaccinations, parasite control, etc.), as well as care for any illnesses or injuries.<\/li>\n<li>Budget for potential emergencies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Obey\n<ul>\n<li>Clean up after your pet.<\/li>\n<li>Obey all local ordinances, including licensing, leash requirements and noise control.<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t allow your pet to stray or become feral.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Identify\n<ul>\n<li>Make sure your pet is properly identified (i.e., tags, microchips, or tattoos) and keep its registration up-to-date.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Limit\n<ul>\n<li>Don&#8217;t contribute to our nation&#8217;s pet overpopulation problem: limit your pet&#8217;s reproduction through spay\/neuter, containment or managed breeding.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Prepare\n<ul>\n<li>Prepare for an emergency or disaster, including assembling an evacuation kit.<\/li>\n<li>Make alternate arrangements if you can no longer provide care for your pet.<\/li>\n<li>Recognize any decline in your pet&#8217;s quality of life and make timely decisions in consultation with a veterinarian.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Owning a pet is a privilege, but the benefits of pet ownership come with responsibilities.
