The most important points to be\u00a0 made about FIV are the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>FIV is a \u201ccat only\u201d disease and cannot be transmitted to humans under any\u00a0 circumstances<\/li>\n<li>Most often, FIV+ cats live long, healthy and relatively symptom free\u00a0 lives<\/li>\n<li>FIV is not easily passed between cats. It cannot be transmitted casually\u00a0 through shared litter boxes, water and food bowls, or when snuggling or playing.\u00a0 It is also very rarely transmitted from a mother to her kittens<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>By clarifying the above misunderstandings potential adopters should feel\u00a0 more comfortable in putting FIV+ cats on their adoptive \u201cshort list.\u201d There are\u00a0 other questions and concerns, however, that adopters may have and I\u2019ll address\u00a0 the ones I hear most frequently from visitors to the MSPCA-Angell Adoption\u00a0 Center.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Just how is FIV transmitted?\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The virus is spread through blood transfusions, badly infected gums or \u2014 in\u00a0 very rare cases \u2014 bite wounds. Unneutered male cats, because of their tendency\u00a0 to roam and fight when allowed to be outside, are at higher risk for exposure\u00a0 (and transmission) of the virus.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How do I ensure my other cat(s) are safe?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A neutered FIV+ cat who lives in a home, is extremely unlikely to pass the\u00a0 virus on to FIV-negative cats in the home so long as they are properly\u00a0 introduced. We have many cat adopters whose FIV+ cats live perfectly well with\u00a0 their FIV- feline housemates.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How do I keep an FIV+ cat healthy?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>FIV+ cats should be kept as healthy as possible \u2014 but my recommendations for\u00a0 how to achieve this are the same for all cats, even those not exposed to the\u00a0 virus.<\/p>\n<p>FIV+ cats should be kept exclusively indoors, free from unnecessary stress\u00a0 and fed a high-quality diet.
