The AHF Orangutan Caring Veterinary Scholarship Program

"My name is Awaluddin and I am one of the
luckiest persons on earth as I was awarded
the Orangutan Caring Scholarship in 2010
after a very competitive selection process
in my campus. My main goal for getting the
scholarship is to help me achieve my dream
to become a primate veterinarian. I am
passionate about orangutans and I want to
contribute to improving orangutan health
programs in Indonesia."

The Animal Health Foundation of California (AHF) collaborates with the Orang Utan Republik Foundation (OURF) to support needy veterinary students in Aceh, Sumatra. The AHF provides scholarships within the OURF's Orangutan Caring Scholarship program to students who might otherwise be unable to attend veterinary school. Since granting the first scholarship in 2006, twelve veterinary students have received four-year scholarships. The AHF funded four new five-year scholarships in 2011 covering the cost of tuition and the internship required to become a practicing veterinarian.

Top applicants from Syiah Kuala University in Aceh received the four five year AHF sponsored scholarships on March 16, 2012.

The Orangutan Caring Scholarship (OCS) is one of OURF's main education programs in Sumatra where in collaboration with the Yayasan Orangutan Sumatra Lestari-Orangutan Information Center (OIC). The Orangutan Caring Scholarship program is an investment in long-term orangutan conservation by supporting talented students who will advocate for orangutans as professionals.

AHF Scholarship recipients will provide periodic updates to OURF and AHF, which will be featured on the AHF web site. Donors will be able to track the student's progress as he or she matriculates.

AHF also assists the University of Syiah Kuala by providing professional veterinary journals and books for their library. If you are a veterinarian or library with books to donate, please contact Pam Becker.
