Heart Warming Support

When Junior was brought into the Community Veterinary Hospital in Garden Grove, he was just shy of being a year old. Junior is a terrier-mixed, male, neutered dog that had a right front radius and ulna fracture or a forelimb fracture. Julia Reyo had taken Junior to an emergency clinic, but Ms. Reyo didn’t have the funds required, so she turned to the Community Veterinary Hospital.

William A. Grant II, DVM remembered the case. “The emergency clinic didn’t do much for Junior, so when we saw him, we took an x-ray and determined what it would take to fix the fracture. It was a difficult one because there was very little bone on the lower part of the fracture to repair.”

Junior’s family didn’t have the money they’d need for the necessary procedures.

“There are some people you see that have the money, but choose not to spend it. And there are others who simply don’t have it.

After taking Junior’s case to the SCVMA, the Angel Fund donated $500 towards Junior’s care. The Community Veterinary Hospital discounted $850. And additional help came in an especially heartwarming outpouring of good will. When Junior’s family came in to put down their deposit for the surgery, Julia’s young daughter arrived with coins she had rolled up to help pay for the surgery. Everyone in the office heard that she had taken the money out of her piggy bank so she could help take care of her dog. There wasn’t a dry eye to be seen. And that included other clients waiting in the lobby. Two of them were so moved that they asked how they could help. One woman wrote a check for $100, and another gentleman gave $100 in cash to help pay for Junior’s care.

The combined efforts of Community Veterinary Hospital, the Angel Fund , Junior’s family and a couple of kind strangers led to Junior running around, jumping, and doing very well to this day.

“It was an unfortgetable case, because had we not fixed the facture, the option was either amputation of the leg or putting the dog to sleep,” said Dr. Grant. “And no one here wanted those options for Jurior. This was our first Angel Fund case. In fact, we didn’t want to use all the money at one time, but it was nessary for this case. We made that decision and it was the right decision.

Dr. Grant’s father was a past president of the SCVMA and was around when the then executive director, Don Mahan, began the Animal Health Foundation to help cases and to help veterinarians help people in the community. The Animal Health Foundation and the Angel Fund seem like a family affair for Dr. Grant, as his wife, Dayna Wiedenkeller, DVM was on the Board of Trustees when the SCVMA started the Angel Fund.

“Getting that started again and seeing how well it helps those in need is so great,” said Dr. Grant. “A case like this is exactly what these funds should be used for.”

Junior’s family agrees. They wrote a thank you note expressing their gratitude for Dr. Grant’s and the Angel Fund’s help.

Dear Animal Health Foundation Angel Fund

My name is Julia Reyo. I’m Junior’s owner and I’m sincerely thankful for the help you have given me and my family. I will always be grateful for your help because if it wouldn’t have been for you, Junior wouldn’t be here with us. My children and I don’t have enough words to thank you. We are really happy and thank god he’s with us right now thanks to your help. Thank you so much and we will never forget what you did for us and we will always have you in our prayers.

Sincerely, Julia Reyo and Family
