Mommaz Boy

Mommaz Boy

Two years ago, Alejandra Becerra was at her job in the midst of her day working hard when she heard knocking on the window nearest her. Peering out, she saw a little girl holding up a kitten, gesturing to Alejandra, “You want to take her?”  Alejandra walked outside to a woman and her daughter giving away kittens in a box. When Alejandra saw the three remaining kitties, she did the only thing a true cat lover could do, she said, “I’ll take all three, and you really should get the mother of these kittens fixed because it’s better for her and for you, too.

When Alejandra took them home, she named all of her cats, Bagira, Mommaz, and Trublz Becerra. When she named Mommaz, she had thought he was a girl, thus the feminine name, but even when Alejandra learned his true sex, Mommaz continued to be Mommaz.

One night after Alejandra came home from work, she noticed that a heavy stack of boxes had fallen from one of her top closet shelves. Then the sight of Mommaz limping caught her eye. She picked him up and examined his leg, which just hung loosely to the side. When she put him back down, he continued to limp and she knew something just had to be wrong. She thought that either Mommaz must have fallen from that top shelf, or perhaps the stack of boxes must have fallen on him. Alejandra put him in his cat carrier and listened to his meows of pain as she drove him to the hospital. When she got there Alejandra learned that Mommaz’ leg was broken and that he’d need surgery. She also learned when she applied for Care Credit that she didn’t qualify and she simply didn’t have the money to afford the surgery. She knew she could make payments and offered to do so, but the hospital refused her, and she was advised to put her beloved cat down.

Alejandra absolutely would not give up on Mommaz. She went to a friend of hers, who she calls Madcat. Alejandra had met Madcat at a previous job and knew that Madcat had a passion for cats and supporting cat lovers, so she asked Madcat what she should do. Madcat gave her a list of people and organizations to try in order to get financial help, and the Angel Fund was on that list. She also advised Alejandra to go to see Dr. Gay E. Naiditch at the High Desert Animal Care Hospital. Along with a loan from Madcat, the Angel Fund, and financial assistance from the hospital, Alejandra was able get Mommaz the help he needed to get him back home.

Mommaz, Bagira, and Trublz have a new sibling, Shyster. Together they all frolic in the cat room that Alejandra has set up for them, and Alejandra sits and enjoys watching them. “These cats are like my children, and I’m grateful to have them all here with me. I’m so grateful for Madcat, the Angel fund and the help we got from the hospital. I greatly appreciate everything they do for our animals.”
